I goofed off during my vacation and played my new guitar. Very little writing done, which is a great thing because it made me realize that I have a great idea for a story, but no story yet. This happens a lot, and it has to do with an eagerness to actually type the words on the page. But without a story, it's just an idea, and doomed to flounder on the screen while I figure the story out.
So now I'm working on making this idea become a story. Which means I'm learning my characters, my settings. I also have to face up to the fact that I might not be able to come with a story at this time. It's important to note the words in italics. Oh, the story will come to me, and it's up to me to be receptive. I might catch it early, or it might take years, but it will happen.
Story happens when something profound changes the lives of characters you give a damn about. What are these people going to do about this change? For a horror story, this change must be significant, usually life threatening. That's what I need to figure out with my WIP.
And that's where I'm at on the writing front.
