Obsessions and Recurring Themes

Scene from THE ROAD (2009)

It's always about recurring themes with me. I write about the things I obsess about, which isn't new information for anyone. Like, what the hell else would I write about? I think this is the M.O. of most writers. Those lingering thoughts that invade our minds, usually at the most inappropriate times. This is why I get my best ideas, or expansions of ideas, whenever I'm doing something else. Much has been written by myself and others about what happens when we engage in mundane, routine activities and how our minds work overtime on our stories even when we're not sitting in front of the typewriter. Combine that with something you're obsessed about ...

Well, you probably ain't going to get much else accomplished when that happens.

Lately, I've been obsessing about science-fiction, specifically dying Earth, dystopian, post-apocalyptic, and strangely retro futuristic (think the Fallout games and the recent works of Nathan Balingrud and you're all over it.). I think if you mix a lot of that stuff together it resembles something I call Psychedelic Doom. Psychedelic Doom is a music genre, and it sounds a lot like Kyuss but every song is twenty minutes of "Freedom Run" with slowed down trippy, jazzy parts in the middle. Bands like Electric Wizard, Fu Manchu, Orange Goblin, Kal-El, REZN, Hawkwind, Harvestman. But there's no reason it can't be a sub-genre, or even a mode like Urban Wyrd.

This is where my mind is lately. And yes, it still falls into the realm of horror because I tend to cast a very wide net when it comes to horror, and to me there's nothing scarier than tripping out at the end of the fucking world. I'll be expanding my concepts about psychedelic doom a little more down the road, so watch this space.

I'll be using this space for my more essay-like content. Still personal, but more concerned with craft, genre, writing. I plan on continuing my patreon, though I will be experimenting with paid content here as well. If this works better for that than patreon, then this will be my place. For now, this is just a web-site with a monthly newsletter.

The main thing anyone can do here right now is subscribe. Only the newsletter will hit your email, unless something pressing occurs, but posts like this will be here with a link on my socials to drive the visits.

If you're already subscribed, THANK YOU! I really appreciate you!
