Discovery writing is both extremely joyous and frustrating for me. Joyous as in it's my zen, it's where me and the story come together in a glorious union of heart and soul. Frustrating as in it takes me several thousand words, words that will probably hit the cutting floor, just to make heads or tails out of my characters.
But hey, this is what I signed up for.
The writing is going well, but I'm using all this space for character development, so of course I'm ready to move into some weird stuff. Part of it is that even though there's been some mysterious stuff already—a missing local author, fans of the author poking around, and fleeting visions of someone who could be the missing writer or someone else—these things typically don't faze me in a story. For a lot of readers, these things would crank up their spidey senses, but I'm so jaded with horror and weird shit that this kind of stuff barely moves the needle for me. These tidbits are mere catalysts to propel me and my readers to the really weird shit.
Again, this is what I signed up for.
Anyway, I'm really liking my mechanical keyboard, though I'm still getting used to it. I'm finding I can type more, and faster, without having to look at the keyboard so much. And my hands aren't cramping.
Listening to Kamasi Washington's The Epic on vinyl and getting some words on the page.
