I've been blogging.
For a while now, actually. First with my old website, then substack (left that place because nazi crap, which sucks because it was perfect) then the newsletter at buttondown, then patreon, and now here. I seriously doubt I'll move services again. There's no such thing as the perfect social media site, or the perfect webhost, or the perfect newsletter/blog service. Every single thing can be problematic if you dig deep enough. How much of that can you live with is the question, and Ghost seems to be the better out of a lot of options.
I'm glad to see folks getting back into the blogging game. Let me stop you before you say blogging is tired. No, you're tired. If you think blogging is tired, then you're probably wired to some algorithm-based video site that has you tapping on your screen to doomscroll your life away. Writers write, and even when we're on a deadline, or smack dab in the middle of a first draft, or on our third rewrite and heavy into edits, the compulsion to write about something other than the thing you need to work on is so great, we invented blogging to get the rest of the crap off our minds and on to the page.
We are compelled to write.
It comes with the territory.
With blogs, you have to chose to check it out. Sure, we will post links on social media for likes and shares but really we want clicks to the actual blog. But, the choice is yours, you have to decide to click the link. Once you're here, then we have to make sure you like what you read. Sometimes you will, sometimes not. But the choice to read, and/or stay, is completely yours. No algorithm based thirst traps here. Just words arranged in such a way to maximize provocative reactions.
Write about your day, what you're working, something you enjoy, things you hate. Be as personal or as formal as your heart desires. Use the space to examine things that affect you. If there's something out there that excites you, that you're fired up about, tell us about it. If something is pissing you off, let us know. Rant, rave, drool, it's all for you.
I think more people want to blog than they let on. Why don't they? Fear. Thinking they don't have anything to say. Being for real, you might not actually have anything worthwhile to say. I tend to blog for myself, meaning that even if no one ever reads this, I've at least taken the time to write out something I have feelings about. It keeps my fingers in shape and my mind sharp. It helps dull the edge of a really shitty day. I can blog when I want and no one is going to jump down my neck if I don't keep to a strict schedule. The worst thing you can do if you want to blog is to not blog.
You want to blog?
Get after it. Show us what you've got.
