Been thinking about the connection (to me) with heavy metal and dark fantasy/horror fiction. Specifically, how progressive metal, which typically blends many modes and styles such as classical music and jazz, reminds me of how modern speculative fiction–especially dark fantasy–use other genres to flesh out the story. Fiction blending genres is nothing new, and maybe this association between prog-metal and fantasy is just now becoming apparent to me when it something others have noticed before.

Modern fantasy throws everything in, including the kitchen sink.
