I think working in terms of novelettes for my WIP is probably the best way forward, and I'm kinda miffed I didn't realize that was what I was doing sooner.

The way this project will break down is to start with now: the driver and the mage. The driver doesn't know the whole story, just that there's some weird people after the mage, and they're not afraid to use force. Then, backtrack a decade with a novelette about why the mage is being chased. Also, during the same time period, a stop with some other characters as they discover something in the desert that will fundamentally change the world as we know it now. Back to the now, we learn the true power of our mage. Back to past, but a little closer to now, tying together two past events. Then finally back to now, to the finale.

Three novelettes based in the now, two in the past. If I continue this way, what originally seemed like an unsurmountable task is now broken down into easy to swallow chunks. The glue to this is the characters. We have to give a damn about them, and fortunately, that's what I love writing the most.

I added another 1K words today, but I've still got a ways to go before working on the beginning section that's set now. I want to get this past part down, and I might even write the next part before going to the section set in the present. It's this kind of thing that outlines are used for.

Outline for story, draft for characters.
